) It might make countries too complacent when it comes to protecting themselves against ground attacks.

"The recent war declarations on barsoom were in response to his declaration on SKP star, which is a country located squarely in the center of taylor desert. All attempts to conquer any country withing land range of members of the army of the twelve monkeys are viewed as aggressive actions, and will not be tolerated. We will try to prevent such actions to the best of our ability; and furthermore, we will try to conquer any such possessions, and will behave aggressvily towards any presidents perpetrating such actions. I expect that many of you would do the same."

Yes hymyland, that is a policy of our federation. Anyone else in the GR world is completely free to claim that same policy, as Erehwon did before. There is no double standard. We're not trying to dictate anyone else's policies. Only communicating our own. No double standard. Is this really so complicated?
On the Golden Council thread that you linked above, you wanted to make it a universal rule that countries couldn't be imported in land range of other countries. That was an attempt to impose a universal rule on some people who were bound to be against it. We're not doing that. We're not telling anyone what to do. That's what my post was in response to. The 12 Monkeys are not saying that it would be wrong or "illegal" to put land neighbors near us. Only letting you know what our reaction would be. Erehwon was not "wrong" in trying to take over SKP's country. But for a number of reasons it was prudent for our federation to take the actions they did.
I, like Avalon, am tired of explaining this. I'm not doing it anymore. Demonize us as much as you want.

Here, this is as simple as I know how to make this:
If you left the game, promised your country to Erehwon, he declared on it, and then I came in trying to take it I would not complain about Erehwon warning me off.

Just to set the record straight, I agree that my "gambit" was provocative (perhaps even threatening, but that is in the eye of the beholder). It wasn't well thought out, and was done in a moment of pique over nothing to do with the game - I spilled coffee on a diskette and lost many hours of work, which is why I'm in the office now and all weekend catching up. Were a competitor to do the same thing to a departing ally of mine, I would react in much the same way as the Monkeys did and I would hope my allies would do the same.
Btw, I really didn't realize that Jackle's war commenced before mine. Boneheaded, I know, and it left me in a position with significant chance of losses and little chance of gain, but what can I say...

I thank my allies for the significant support they offered, even in a situation resulting from my self-inflicted diplomatic leap.
