1. It is a bit up to your taste in terms of what corp type you choose. There are a few that tend to turn better profits than others, but in general almost any corp type can be profitable if run correctly. Stick to a couple of corp types though, I would recommend against too much diversification. Also, stay away from military corps.
2. In terms of trade strategies I think that it is critical that selling strategy be carefully managed, I let buying strategies be automated (a lot of people have there opinions as to what this level should be, so search the help threads for what is best). Also, upgrading can not be automated, so manage that. I would also raise salary level to a pretty high level (I am at around 500% at the moment). Other than that, make sure that the actual selling and buying of products is automated. I basically let the game take care of the rest. One thing that is useful to manage, though not critical by any means, is loans. I generally let the system automate it, but when I remember to I check out my corp loans and if any of them are at negative money I request a loan at 4% (otherwise you will often end up with corps having loans of 7-15%).
