You are right if you don't look for something you might not see it. Animals do think and are intellingent, they are just not as inteligent as humans. It's like the difference between a Pentium 3 with old software and 2 word documents on the hard drive and a supercomputer with thousands of processors, optimised software and a huge database - the same underlying principles, but on a different scale.
Some animals also do have a free will and most of them do feel if you bother to observe. They love and hate, they remember the good and the bad and they most certainly hurt and suffer just like humans do. But if you don't look for it you might not see it. There are people who eat dolphins, whales, apes, elephants or dogs to mention a few more unacceptable for the western culture examples.
