Dave I'm not sure if you understood what I ment regarding electoral college in the US. With the electoral college if you live in an incumbent state or even region then your vote does not matter, its only in swing area's where politicians even need to earn your vote. Your point about large states controlling the election doesn't make any sense to me, if your against a two party system why would you not want to give pore voting power to the individual(well most will get more voting power anyway)? Do you think all of California votes for one candidate? Of course not, so why should the largest number of people that voted one way decide the votes for the rest of the population, after all its not a state election is it?
Popular vote election is a fairer form of representation, but your worried about majority rule?
Well then you also need instant runoff voting, everyone's in the nation are put into one big pot, voters rank their candidates they most like to least like (wow not voting for the least worst candidate). The candidate with the least total votes gets their votes redistributed, according to their voter's rankings, this happens for the next lowest candidate (placed last candidate gets their 3rd ranking redistributed), the process goes on until the two largest candidates remain, in which case the largest vote wins. This may sound like a confusing process but really all your doing is voting who you want with still haveing the chance to vote least worst, candidate can assign their voting rankings, so if it seams like too many choices you can decide to parrot your favored candidate. All this will do is probably significantly increase voter turnout, and produce a fairer election result, and maybe a more beneficial result from election, because candidates will have earn votes with superior policy then all other candidates instead of demographic dominance.
