Farmer Bob,

That's not how I was seeing it. The military values are just something the army has you memorize. Very few people live by them.

The benefits of service are learning discipline, respect, vocational education and experience, and responsibility to name a few.

I know so many "thugs" and ex-gang members who were reformed in the service. My best friend in the world, and probably for the rest of my life, is a mexican ex-gang member but if you saw him today you would never believe that he sold drugs and shot people in the streets as a teen. He's a great soldier that is begging to go back to Iraq for a third tour even though he has rods in his back from a three story fall last time he was there.

Of course it takes a will of their own to make those changes. No doubt this wouldn't help everybody, but it would certainly help some and possibly many. It would ease race relations as well. The army was the least racist place I've ever been. It didn't matter what color your were or where you came from, you were wearing green and that's what was important. That's not to say that racism wasn;t there, but it was tempered with respect.

Of course, if service was mandatory, whose to say that would stay the same? This is al theoretical.
