Death is not a punishment it is a release. Many people do many evils things that provoke a violent repulsion in the rest of us. It is the natural reaction to want to kill somebody capable of such evil. But what does adding one more death to the tally actually achieve? The evil behind these acts is not detered by the death penality.

I think part of being human is rising above animal insticts. Rising above the level of the murderer by showing them mercy that they never showed their victims. Many will not acknownldge that act, but if one in a 100 or a 1000 is changed by this act surely this is a better outcome than killing them all.

The law should be impersonel, a criminals sentence should be judged by the law not an emotional response. The morality of any law depends on culture. There are few absolutes in morality. To kill is wrong, sometimes unavoidable but it is still wrong. The death sentence is avoidable and should be avoided.

Is it right for a policman to shot dead a suicide bomber before they can set the bomb off? It is only right insofar has the police officers ability to stop the act. Sadly the means of stopping such people non-lethaly is usually lacking.

I am no expert but I would imagine societies in general move away from extreme punishments as their social morality develops. In time I hope all societies move away from extreme punishemt. The person who belives killing a gay is morally right is no different from the person that belives killing a murderer is right. They both belive there opinon to be moral. It is only the outsider that considers them wrong. In 100 year time I expect people will look back at us and consider us all to be a bit barbaric.
