Ignoring entirely the fact that the death penalty is ineffective as a deterrent, I believe it to be wholly unnecessary.

Retribution and reparation - or justice as they are collectively known - is a wholly subjective matter, depending upon the society into which one was born. For some, justice means treating everybody fairly, and dealing with those who break the law in a manner which respects their human rights. To others, justice is a simple synonym for revenge, either on a personal or collective level.

The death penalty is an excellent method of exacting revenge upon somebody for their past crimes. But the possibility of punishing an innocent in this manner is far too high to justify it's widespread use, in my opinion.

But in terms of punishing a murderer, who clearly has little regard for life anyway, it is a flawed method which can bring only bitter emptiness to those whom have lost a loved one. Punishment should alway entail the loss of something which holds meaning to the person being punished. Crushing the car and destroying the licence of a motoring offender. Fining a thief to the brink of their means. Removing the right of a child abuser to be around children.

Punishment for the crime of murder, in my eyes, should be taking away the life of the murderer, but in a manner in which they are aware of losing their freedoms. A prison sentence of terminal length.
