"My initial arguement stands though. Who amongst us has the wisdom or courage to order anothers demise without hiding behind the skirts of law, often very old law, written by detatched people in their ivory towers, be they politicians, priests, dictators or other?"

We have a sophisticated legal system. It was not dreamt up by "detached people in their ivory towers". Capital punishment laws don't always make perfect sense but they were not capriciously drafted either.

Personally, I don't think it's right that killing a "public servant", law enforcement officer, etc should be handled any different than killing a beggar. Why value one more than another?

The only exception I would make to that are assassinations of heads of state.

Also, I'm against capital punishment for crimes, such as rape, that do not involve murder. Is a persons chastity worth more than another persons life? I don't think so. Besides, it gives the rapist a motive to kill the victim. If they're going to receive the same penalty whether they kill or not then they may just kill him/her in order to cover their trail. An exception to this would be something like treasonous activities which indirectly lead to the deaths of people.
