Certain individuals are simply too dangerous to live. Some due to incurable mental illness, some due to just plain evil natures. The threat their continued existence poses to society is too great. They must die in order to prevent the possibilty of their committing the same crimes again. See Sam's example.

I must concur with my comrade, DavePat, however, that the current system in practice in many US states is too prone to error, inefficient, lenghty, and costly to serve the public well.

The number of cases where wrongful convictions have been overturned upon discovery of exculpatory evidence must also give us pause.

The moral arguments against taking life are hardly worth discussing. Societies must and will protect themselves, frequently by selective murder through military action against foreign enemies or its own citizens through legal process. "Due Process" is the benchmark by which our societies attempt to regulate and safeguard the application of their notions of justice. Thusly, execution is not combat is not murder.

No one has a "right" to life. It will end for all of us at some point. In the context of this argument, violation of law forfeits life for some. We may debate methods, legal processes, and circumstances forever, but the issue of whether a society has a right to inflict death in its own interest is not open to debate by any rational individual.

It is myopic and naive in the extreme to suggest otherwise.
