being from TEXAS i think the idea would have no legs. we'd get closer to annexing Mexico and Canada than merging states. there's no reason to do so and right now the US has so many other more pressing issues at hand than trying to merge the states. the political, economic and cultural self interests are such that it would be impossible to get politicians to agree to do this. btw, Texas, when it was admitted maintained the right to divide into 5 separate states. currently, no legs there either. however, i would suggest that the electoral college is outmoded and that we might try and change that. it makes little sense to have a president elected who does not gain a majority of the popular vote and that we elected a president on a hanging chad.
