Bob:Can the common people of the Islamic world be content to coexist in a civilized manner or will the forces of tribalism and religious sectarianism continue to dominate their cultures?

This does not just apply to the Islamic world, unfortunately. Exactly the same could be said of much of Christian Sub-Saharan Africa where, despite the conversion to Christianity following the mass imports of British Missionaries, tribal divisions continue to cause friction (and the occasional genocide).

This is, in part, due to colonialism as the borders between colonies were drawn up to suit European needs and conveniences, rather than reflecting local borders between tribes. Independence was granted along these borderlines splitting some tribes between two or more countries, and placing two tribes within one country (often the larger one seizing power and setting about wiping out the other).

It seems even Christianity is not above tribal conflict in Africa.
