Davepat: 'this chain has been repeated time and again, over and over.' - When? Where? The scenario you describe is so abstracted and idealised as to be meaningless. The mechanisms you talk about exist nowhere but in your theory.

This is the point I began with: a free market, whether you think it's a good thing or not, is a logical impossibility, an oxymoron, a conradiction in terms. A market cannot exist outside a context of social and political arrangements which regulate and facilitate it.

Zet: Yes, and it wasn't just that they couldn't buy surpluses from abroad. During the Irish famine English merchants exported - exported - from Ireland more than three times as much food as would have fed all those who starved. This means people drove carts and wagons loaded with perfectly good food past piles of corpses and starving beggars - men women and children - so that it could be exported to more lucrative markets. I have read first-hand accounts of this. This is what you get from a so-called 'free' market, which is not free at all, but is actually controlled and regulated and facilitated by a class of people whose value-set does not include an obligation, or even inclination, to help starving people.
