The threat of Islamic Fascism has been around since before WWII. It was merely eclipsed by the cold war struggle. And to answer my own question, I don't believe that Muslims per se are irrational. Islam as a religion is not in opposition to modern life. Millions of adherents life very normal lives by Western standards with no more theological conflict than that experienced by Christians.
Islamic Fundamentalism and its philosophical outgrowth, Islamic Fascism have been usurping the attentions of the West as the adherents to the several different versions of this phenomenom have been the most radical, vocal, and successful in attacking their opposition.
