"But once again, political sensibilities trumped the value of grunts lives."

I'd wager that it's a sad fact that the overwhelming majority of wars are fought for political reasons, and as such, political sensibilities will often trump military efforts to keep their personnel safe.

Dac, I also have a wonderful story of an American who came over to live in Spain and brought a mains-powered alarm clock. These measure time using the frequency of the electricity supply. The 10Hz difference caused it to run slower!

I also like to listen to Americans on the tube in London trying to work out how to pronounce Leicester Square and Gloucester Road (though, to be fair, most non-Brits can struggle).

"[America was] in Europe for 50 years for the great deals on furniture [and not to protect Europeans]."

I am very grateful for America's help in securing Western Europe during the Cold War. However, I suspect it was again for political reasons and not some noble notion of protecting Europe. Like the Marshall Plan (which ensured Europe's recovery after WWII so that America would have a market for its exports), I suspect that America would have suffered economically if Western Europe had turned red (instead of the slightly mauve colour of its current socialism).

Whatever the reason, Europe should be grateful.
