The conflict in the former Yugoslavia was a European problem in which we, the US, had no national interest. There was no point in our military involvement other than playing world cop in a nasty active domestic dispute. What burned my ass at the time was the hand wringing in Germany and France about how dangerous the situation was for European security and that we were somehow obligated to intervene. As DavePat shared his research above, the major European players had the assets to act but chose not to.
The threat from Russia was bluster. They were tied up with their own troubles and hardly able to project force anywhere. Not to mention the economic implications of pissing off their new trading partners. So the slaughter continued and hands were wrung and token peacekeeper forces were sent until the US was guilt tripped into sending our kids into harm's way on behalf of a pansy continent.
I have tremendous respect for the soldiers of Europe who can't be blamed for the hypocrisy and cowardice of their political leadership. But the European people need a swift kick in the ass. They're acting like it's 1930 again.
