It's amazing when you watch network "news" or even read a newspaper article. If one has a little training in PR, one can recognize the techniques that permeate what is supposed to be objective reporting. What ever happened to Who, What, Where, and When, and How? Now we get op/ed in everything.
For example, yesterdays news blurbs where reporting a rise in military suicides. The number was around 300. No additional statistics for perspective. What are the suicide rates per 1000? What are the rates for civilians? What have rates been in the past? Historical highs and lows? Just enough info given to give an impression and thus serve a political purpose.
This report reminded me of the reports during Desert Shield in 90. The media was reporting the number of accidental deaths in theater during the buildup, with out reporting the facts that the rates were less than a third of the rates had the same number of troops been at home stations in the states.
Is this due to overwhelming incompetence in the field or simply pure politicization of our media establishment?
Take your pick.
